Trumpism's most telling and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his plans for a lavish reception room twice the size than the White House and then began unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to construct it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to international aid amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week a study projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, the majority of whom maintain dealings with the government.

As confusing as it is to watch the leader attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into a figure of animosity who blesses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, across decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade covert authorities. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, specifically for the poor – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and housing. The Savior's reaction to violence is to turn the other cheek – not as a demonstration of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the aggressor; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your outer garment you must offer the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and clear truth that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a type of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith rather a scandalous religion: engaging for the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become inspired to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump arise in this past year. It has provided substantial consolation to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged voters to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We shall require to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
