The former England manager Shares Focus on Mentoring Young People Rather than Club Management

Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a return to football management, explaining that it would be tough to duplicate the special mission he encountered as the national team coach.

The former coach suggested his aim to dedicate his efforts toward working with young people and combating what he called a pervasive negative narrative now found in the country.

Exploring Fresh Opportunities Beyond Football

In a recent radio interview, he was asked about talk linking him with vacant management roles in the English football and other leagues.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

A Passion for Role Models

Prior to the release of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he shared that he is deeply committed about offering guidance for teenagers, drawing on insights from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

He believes that his experience managing the squad, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds general lessons.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, he remarked: “Parents strive to offer their children a great beginning, but eventually, kids tune out. My household is no different, but I’m convinced this is a vital focus for society.”

He went on: “There’s a negative narrative around our country at the moment and we’ve got to give young people hope, we’ve got to give them guidance. We’ve got incredible talent but we need to them to find the right role models, the right friendship groups because those decisions have such a big impact on the rest of their lives.”

Unity Over Division

He insisted that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the societal attention often highlights disagreement.

“It’s understandable why people are disaffected,” he stated. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

Southgate’s forthcoming book, the book Dear England, is scheduled to present deeper reflections on management and national identity inspired by his distinguished time in football.
