The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
