The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.
