A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
